Description

Maimonides Benevolent Society was established in 1853 by wealthy Jewish immigrants in New York. The society recognized the need for a Jewish Cemetery and purchased burial grounds for members and future generations. This cemetery became Maimonides Cemetery, in Brooklyn, New York. To meet continuing growth, eventually, more land was purchased in Elmont. The cemetery’s administration building was recognized in 1931 by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s building awards competition. Although now neglected, in disrepair and covered with graffiti is still an elegant Art Deco structure.
