Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls

Historic Oakwood Cemetery was founded in 1852 on land donated by Lavinia Porter, daughter of Judge Augustus Porter. The Judge was one of the acknowledged founders of Niagara Falls, and one of its largest landowners. This 170-year-old cemetery covers over 18 acres and has more than 22,000 buried there. In 1913, Oakwood built a magnificent marble mausoleum, designed by the Buffalo architectural firm Green and Wicks. Oakwood today contains many outstanding examples of funerary art, including obelisks, sarcophagi, and beautiful statuary. Additionally, the landscape is lush with mature plantings and trees, many dating from the earliest time of the cemetery. In 2014 the graveyard was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Oakwood Cemetery continues to serve the community with its crematory, columbarium, and gravesites.
