Description

Officially designated a cemetery in 1902, Green River Cemetery had been used as a burial ground by the local working-class fishing families of Springs since before the Civil War. Families with long histories in the region are interred there, including the Millers, Kings, Bennetts, and Talmages. Then in 1956, this changed when Jackson Pollock buried there. It later became famous as the artists' and writers' cemetery. Headstones have become works of art. Despite its name, there are no rivers near the cemetery.
